As realtors how many times do you ask yourself this question: Do you have the right to charge consulting fees? There are many times in which we are retained as consultants so should we ask for a retainer fee on certain projects? This business is changing from a sales profession to a consulting profession. I believe the change is overdue.
Many of the discount companies charge fees to just put the property on the market, paperwork, processing fee, etc. There are many professional real estate consultants that are not even licensed agents giving seminars on how to make money in real estate, etc and they are getting paid way more than the typical agent. Look at Robert Kyosaki as an example. Most agents need to improve their skill levels and their self confidence levels; become empowered to be paid their worth.

Realtors Charge Consultant Fees?

I'm always shocked by the way some agents think. They don't treat this as a business and they have accepted the industry norm and don't dare change it. I charge an upfront fee to all of my buyers and sellers. It's non-refundable and we get the fee on 90% of the clients we take on. That being said, I turn away more listings than I take. I've turned down 5 this week. If a seller won't let us help them then I'm not going to fight them on it. So many agents take a listing no matter what and that's so dumb. It's a business and you can't afford to lose money on something you can't sell. We work hard and deserve to be paid accordingly. If I don't sell a clients home.
How many buyers have you driven around only to find out later they aren't going to buy, can't afford to buy, or use someone else to buy? I remember when my team started making all of our buyers sign one year buyer agency agreements the agents in my market went nuts. This isn't the way everyone else does it! But I have piece of mind knowing my clients are secured with us. Those other agents do not.
We need to be professionals and if you've positioned yourself accordingly then the clients will listen to you and follow your advice. This makes the business so much easier. Treat yourself as a professional and run it like a business. You'll be able to provide better service to your clients, get compensated for your time, and have a life!
