Courtesy Flush with a Fee

You may not realize it, but we are now on our way to having our county government dictate when to have your septic tanks pumped out in QAC. In fact, we are the first county in Maryland to have mandatory septic pump outs! Last night, our commissioners voted in favor of the ordinance, except Commissioner Courtney Billups.

Did this really happen......even though a room full of protesters voiced their opinions against the proposal? Did the commissioners listen to their constituents or was that just a worthless exercise and a waste of time? My sources tell me that the commissioners had their minds made up before the hearing.

Here's the skinny: Every five years you will have to submit documentation demonstrating that your septic tank has been pumped. Or you will be fined somewhere in the ball park of $250 and worst case scenario, a lien will be placed against your house. Never mind we are having hard economic times.

You may ask, "Why on earth did this become an issue?" The commissioners have argued that it is a way to save the bay. I don't know about you, but is it really governments place to tell us how to service our own septic tanks? What if there is only 2 people who live in a home, or what about the couple who live here only 3 months out of the year, or why not connect the sewer line ASAP to the most vulnerable homes in the county down Rt. 8? Why is the sewer plant laying dormant? Advocates of the "Courtesy Flush with a fee" argued that if sewer was extended down Rt. 8 that would cause development and lo and behold more people would invade QAC. I think not.
